The Good Friends of Jackson Elias, Podcast Episode 143: Violence in Call of CthulhuPublisher: Paul Fricker

Episode 143: Violence in Call of Cthulhu

If you’ve spent any time discussing Call of Cthulhu online, you’ve probably had someone tell you that if your investigator so much as enters combat, you’ve lost. This is a game of careful investigation, putting pieces together and learning secrets man was not meant to know. If that’s the case, why do most of our games end up with everything on fire?

This is not to say that violence in Call of Cthulhu is a bad thing. We’ve all played plenty of fun, action-packed games. It just seems like the easy option sometimes. In the real world, we (as individuals, not a species) usually sort out our conflicts non-violently. An average group of investigators, on the other hand, tends to resolve most scenarios with extreme prejudice. Why is this and what are the alternatives?

Following our usual format for such discussions, we look at the portrayal of violence in Lovecraft’s fiction, the role it plays in Call of Cthulhu and how we might put together a scenario that doesn’t rely on a violent resolution. Then we punch each other in the face and burn Paul’s house down.

The show may contain occasional swearing and is thus NSFW.

    Runtime: 53 min

Previous episodes include discussions of 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu rules, stories by H.P.Lovecraft, Gencon, interviews with game designers and much more.

Four Friendly Goblins version ColourPublisher: HarHolPen RPG Archive

I thought some of you might find this useful for Goblin your PCs and friendly NPCs. These are originally sketches I made on a train a while ago for my own game so they're a little rough compared to my other stuff (hence the price). But you know if you want more chill goblins you can pay more than $0, or give some feedback. My favorite PC is a goblin and these sketches were her conception.

  • 11/13/18--07:46: Ursa Minor
  • Ursa MinorPublisher: Thomas Davis

Ursa Minor is a concise guidebook for using characters to drive the plots of role-playing games. Crafted to be easily added onto existing rpgs, Ursa Minor is a prognosticator allowing character emotions to carve plot points from the uncaring environment, their own struggles, or even the proud vagaries of fate.

Ursa Minor is not an rpg system in itself. To play at least one additional rulebook (not included!) is needed. My personal favorite rulebook is Tom Moldvay's 1981 "Magenta" edition of Gygax and Arneson's Dungeons and Dragons. Nonetheless Ursa Minor should work with the core of most rpgs in any genre. An example is my own fantasy rpg, To Blave!, which is a separate product. Players need only characters, common dice, and an eagerness to make the most out of metaphor.

The features which Ursa Minor offers for almost any existing rpg include the following...

Motivations and Idioms: These 36 common-sense traits can be chosen or randomly rolled for each character. They combine to imply goals which shape the plans the character employs to navigate the seas of fate. (pg. 1-3)

Solo Notes: Most of these rules work very well for allowing the DM to be a player too. Notes included point out when to invoke the rules, how to interpret them fairly, and recording their results (pgs. 3, 4, 5, 8, and 11).

Turmoil: The specter of things done and left undone can drive the plot, variously slamming the player characters onto the rocks of their own ambitions, or leading them through darkness to their own salvations (pg. 4).

The Limner and The Fray: two systems which quickly and efficiently solve any contention. The Limner simply combines a 3d6 roll with the DM's intuition for a quick answer. The Fray uses straightforward conversions and a 4d6 roll to allow opposing attributes or challenges to contest one another across an equitable field, even if from different contexts or entirely different rpgs. The Fray also incorporates the concept of gray areas  and extremes, creates Incidents which can alter the plot, and allows Turmoil to exert pressure on outcomes (pg. 5-8)

Rolls, Goals, and Plans: "Bihex" and "Trihex" rolling are defined for large randomizations (36 and 216 possibilities respectively). The characters' choices of goals affect their plans. Knowing these sets the stage for cooperation, compromise, and conflict as the plans proceed or Incidents complicate them (pg. 9-10).

Incidents and Augury: characters' goals and plans are antagonized by fate. The Incident Engine describes these challenges and the Augury system provides hundreds of descriptors to flesh them out (pg. 11-18)

Creative Commons Licensing: Like my fantasy rpg To Blave! (a separate product) Ursa Minor is released with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. You are free to share and adapt this material for any purpose, including commercially, as long as you give attribution. (pg. 18)

Appendices: bathe in statistics and likelihoods -- from the odds of 4d6 rolls to the conversion of Trihex rolls into percentages (ascending, descending, and randomized). Impressive how powerful a few cubes can be. (pg. 19-21)

Six sided basis: Good old d6 cubes are the only dice you need. One is fine, three are better, and differing sizes, colors, or styles are better still. But one is all you need.

Source text: When you purchase this guidebook, you also get a copy of the Libre Office document used to make it. Edit it to create your own Ursa Minor variants. (The document uses the Liberation Serif (included with Libre Office) and Blackwood Castle (free online) fonts.)

Afterday: 2D6 Adventure After the ApocalypsePublisher: Michael Brown

Film noir (“black film”; plural films noir) is a type of stylized crime movie made from the early 1940s to the late 1950s and known for dark and cynical worldviews, usually illustrated by innovative — and often disturbing — directing and lighting techniques. Films noir highlighted social post-war angst and insecurity and featured such tropes as corrupt authority, deeply flawed protagonists, dark urban settings, dangerous women (the “femme fatale”, often contrasted with the “good girl”), an obsession with the characters’ pasts, unflinching looks at human turpitude, and helplessness against one’s fate.

Awright, that’s enough squawkin’ about the pictures! You birds already knew all that — now you wanna know what’s in it for you! Hang out your ear and I’ll tell you. Midnight Boulevard is the 2D6 treatment for getting along in a film noir world, savvy? It’s based on Cepheus Engine and the Original Science Fiction Roleplaying Game, so you already know kinda what you’re getting with a lifepath mechanic and plenty of past careers. But there’s other swag in here too; here, I’ll let the wisehead tell you:

    • A Scar table to determine the character’s inner turmoil and flawed past that affects present actions
    • Rules for drinking — and being affected by — alcohol, a staple of films noir
    • A table for determining the types of organized crime entities the heroes interact with
    • A selection of equipment, weapons, and vehicles
    • Suggestions for running characters through a film noir setting
    • A selection of slang terms used during the period

Okay, that’s enough, pally; beat it, already! The rest of you mugs, what are you waiting for? Grab Midnight Boulevard and your rod and get in on the action before some torpedo beats you to it.

5E Thanksgiving Mini-Dungeon: A Feast of FuryPublisher: AAW Games

    A 5th Edition, Thanksgiving-themed Mini-Dungeon for 3-4 PCs of levels 5-7

Since its founding the human kingdom of Alngard has been at violent odds with the goblin tribes of the Dynnveil Forest. Goblin raids on settlements were often met (or prompted) by “cleansing” excursions deep into the forest creating a vicious cycle that promised endless animosity.

No one would have suspected that the promise for peace would originate from the goblins, yet just such an opportunity has arisen. The goblin warlord (and self-proclaimed goblin king), Oddu, has united most goblin tribes under his centralized rule.

Calling themselves the Kingdom of the Veil, the unified tribes seek an end to old ways of pillaging and vengeance. After tense negotiating, Oddu has made uneasy peace with the Alngardian king, Ytanar. The kings signed a treaty that grants the Kingdom of the Veil sovereignty of the vast woodland. Peace is ultimately to the benefit of Alngard; thus, Ytarna has agreed to back Oddu’s position as King of the Goblins. There are those among goblinkin who would see this alliance degenerate. Rival goblin warlords seek to topple Oddu from his new throne, and have aligned with an Ogre clan that also resides within the forest.

Holiday Mini-Dungeons are thematically-charged, setting-agnostic short adventures spanning 4 pages.
