Background: Koan: This post contains a new Background for the 5th Edition role-playing game system, the Koan, a citizen of the city-state of Kos in the Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting! It can be applied to anyone from the island of Kos who does not already have another background and can easily be used as a model for backgrounds associated with other campaign settings. 

Background: Combat Engineer: This post contains a writeup for a new 5th Edition Background for a type of military professional skilled at tasks like construction of defensive works, investiture of fortified places, and creation of roads and other infrastructure. It is the background for Trodecarn, one of the pre-generated player characters provided with the scenario. 

Moira: This includes stats for Moira, the owner of the title establishment in "Into the Mines of Moira." She does not play an active role on this module but is an important non-player character in the Dwarven community of Kos and might end up becoming prominent in continuing adventures.

“The Dinner Party ”: This fun piece of short fiction by author Michael O. Varhola about a party of adventurers going out to eat one evening takes place at the Dwarven restaurant called Moira's prior to the events of the adventure. 

Ordin, Orc Wizard/Bartender Miniature: This post has attached to it a high-resolution PDF containing a printable miniature by fantasy artist Amanada Kahl of one of the characters that appears in this adventure (along with his familiar Sleipder, a blue fiendish spider).

Maps are often a staple in fantasy settings. They are how characters find places and can provided needed clues. This is a collection of 100 different maps that can be dropped into a game. They can be used to enliven an existing, but boring, map, as a source of potential adventure hooks or simply as background colour and red herrings.

The maps come in a variety of different types, from paper and vellum to stranger types such as metal, magical or simply odd. Some may not be easily identifiable as maps, at least to start with.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here is a sample result:

Dome - A dome made from hammered bronze that measures 2’ in diameter. The outside of the dome is plain and slightly tarnished. Inside the dome various semi-precious stones of different sizes and in a few shades of red, white and blue colours have been placed in mounts. These stones are joined by lines engraved into the bronze that make them into individual, discrete patterns, ranging in size and shape. The semi-precious stones signify stars, with the sizes and colours related to the colour of the stars and their brightness. The etched lines join the stars together into constellations, although unfamiliar ones.

"At The Crossroads, Dark And Low" is a tabletop roleplaying and storytelling game of cloaks, daggers, and, lest we forget, unspeakable powers granted to a select few by a mysterious, seemingly amoral entity for reasons unknown. 

Mechanically speaking, it is a fairly heavy hack of "Errant," another Cloud Monster Press product designed by yours truly. "At The Crossroads, Dark And Low" inverts its progenitor's core resolution mechanic and turns it to darker and stranger purposes. It is a game about competent, driven people possessed of incredible supernatural gifts. It is, more importantly, about how they choose to apply those gifts and the consequences, complications, and implications that follow their actions.

  • Comparatively rules light system focused on narrative. The core resolution mechanic is not about success or failure but, rather, narrative control.

While the ancient and primordial character of the Australian inland lures many, it is the cities in the south and east that have become centers of population. Surprisingly modern and surprisingly British in character—it is not uncommon for foreign visitors to express astonishment when they disembark from their steamer in Sydney or Melbourne and find themselves in a great metropolis with all the modern refinements of London or New York. Ever present, though, are the modern blights afflicting cities worldwide: organized crime, overcrowding, civil unrest, and uncertainty.

This unique mix of old and new—the tension between civilization and the frontier—is what makes Australia a particularly fertile 1920s setting for Call of Cthulhu. Australian History and Geography

Covers the European exploration, from the land being a convict colony through to the Australian gold rush, and beyond to the Great War and its aftermath. We then look at the geography of the Australian continent, noting some archaeological sites and providing an overview of the differing regions and climates.

Here we focus on the history of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as the white population, and contrast life in the urban and life in the rural environments. Special focus is given to Australian investigators, with new skills and occupations appropriate to for Aboriginal and white Australians. We round things out with brief biographies of some key Australians of the post-Great War period, who might be encountered by wandering investigators.

Resources for 1920s Australia

This chapter provides a toolkit of historical subjects, usable by Keepers, for running games in Australia. Topics include law enforcement, transport, mounting expeditions into the Outback, communications, and sources for research.

Australian Cities

Provides an in depth look at some of Australia’s key cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane. Maps are provide for each city, as well as details on notable mysteries or events, and suggestions concerning cults in thrall to the gods and horrors of the Cthulhu Mythos.

Alcheringa

Known to some as “the Dreaming” or “Dreamtime,” the Alcheringa chapter focuses on how to incorporate the wisdom and learning stemming from Aboriginal cultural traditions into games, and features special rules and mechanics for running “dream quests” to gather important information to solve dire situations facing the investigators, as well as the rewards for “solving” a “Song-Line.” The stages of a Song-Line are discussed and presented with examples, such as the Story of Bigibila, which can be played as a scenario introduction to Alcheringa. Topics such as Aboriginal sorcery and artifacts are also discussed.

The Mythos in Australia

Here, the book looks at the dark conspiracies and taint of the Cthulhu Mythos upon the Australian soil, with particular reference to the legacy of the Great Race, the Flying Polyps, and to the elusive and mysteries Sand Dwellers. A range of Mythos cults are presented, ready for the Keeper to incorporate into games, as well as featuring some of the other Mythos monsters that could be found lurking in dark shadows.

Scenarios

The book is rounded out with two large scenarios and appendices.

Long Way From Home: the investigators look into a series of odd and unexplained meteor showers and are drawn into a web of intrigue involving some ancient foes. Presented as a sandbox with multiple entry points, the scenario features a range of plots and encounters set in the remote region of Paralana.

Black Water, White Death: sought-after papers concerning Australia’s convict history lead the investigators to Tasmania and to a dark mystery to terrify the dreams of all concerned. What begins as a simple matter of attending an auction ends with terror and a cosmic threat.

Gathered in the appendices are some of Australia’s deadly wildlife, with game profiles provided for their use in games, as well as timelines covering Australia, and recommended further reading and viewing.
